We sometimes forget that what we are actually photographing is light and or the absence of light and that this is the key medium within our images. The bright area will attract our eye or that dark area will add drama and mood to our images - without light we have nothing!
We even go to the trouble of creating light via speed lights and studio lights or seek nice light with the golden hour. So its surprising how many people mis this aspect in their photography! My own personal view is that I want no "white" burnt out areas in my images but I do want some "Black " zones in my image - but what about all those light levels in-between? Here are some videos to take a look at that highlight the importance of light in your images. These will make you look at things differently!
I cant emphasize enough The Importance of Light in Photography.
