Welcome to
Photography Talks
& Judging
"Ian is a very entertaining speaker and the talk is very thought provoking. Many people came up to me afterward and told me how much they enjoyed the talk. One member said she found it really interesting and that our club had never had a talk like it.
This person has been member of our club for 49 years!"
" Ian judged our print comp very constructive and very supportive of all our photographers. When you walk away from a comp feeling you have learned something no matter your score then you know the judge was up there with the best. Highly recommended and you will find he also does talks.
We will be getting him back. "
Here is a list of talks that I am able to offer to camera Clubs and Photographic Societies as they develop their programmes for the year.
These talks have been delivered over the past years to clubs up and down the country
as well as to online communities such as Camversation
These have been delivered both face to face and via zoom (as well as via other sharing platforms)
Below you can see a high level overview of the collection followed by a more detailed breakdown of each talk.
As well as the talks I regularly Judge both print and DPI competitions for clubs again across the UK, both face to face and via zoom.
If you are interested in any of the talks or judging then please contact me on

Ian Howard's talk 'The Philosophy of your Photography' last night was fantastic! Ian is a very entertaining speaker and the talk is very thought provoking. Many people came up to me afterward and told me how much they enjoyed the talk. One member said he found it really interesting and that our club had never had a talk like it. This person has been member of our club for 49 years!

Just a note here to say that Cleethorpes Camera Club had Ian Howard (Lens Clof) to give a talk on the Philosophy of Your Photography this morning. He's a great speaker, with an excellent sense of humour. The talk was detailed, and very informative. It certainly made our members think twice about not only what they were photographing, but why and how..... It's not a talk about gear, or software, but about making you consider your work in a way that's not often considered. Thanks Ian for a great morning

Many thanks to Ian Howard who gave his talk to our camera club via zoom on the Philosophy of your Photography or what makes you tick as a photographer to our camera club. Ian had pre-warned us this was not your standard talk and how right he was and his talk and the information / tips provided was just what our members wanted to “Provoke Thought” and “Re-think” why you take photographs and for who, together with analysing your images. Thanks Ian you left us with a lot to think about

The Truth is Black & White (with shades of grey)

According to Ian Howard, our guest speaker at Romford Camera Club last Wednesday, "The Truth is Black and White, with shades of grey!" and his excellent presentation via "Teams" went on to clearly justify that statement.
Ian has put together a very detailed argument for Black and White photography, explaining what good B&W looks like, the best way of taking B&W, which subjects lend themselves to good B&W images, and then talking you through the editing and printing process with images at each stage to demonstrate how to stand a fighting chance of making the magic happen. And, let's be honest, B&W is probably the most talked about genre amongst photographers. Getting it B&W as opposed to B&W with a tint (those printers have a lot to answer for!) can be the bain of our lives !
It was a fascinating and really enjoyable evening with a lot (and I do mean A LOT) of information on offer for novice and experienced photographers alike and everyone in between and also plenty of examples of Ian's superb B&W photography. As part of Ian's presentation he continually asks searching questions to make you think more deeply about your understanding of the topic. He is an educationalist and his expertise in this area comes across very well. We were totally engrossed in the presentation and thoroughly enjoyed Ian's good sense of humour, his photographic expertise and the practical tips he offered and so generously shared. Ian also provides a worksheet (post presentation) with all the key information from his presentation so club members can revise the main points at their leisure. This will definitely be an invaluable resource for club members.
We can highly recommend Ian Howard to camera clubs as a guest speaker. Check out his LENSClof.com blog website for information on the talks/presentations offered and for his contact details.
Last Thursday evening Chichester Camera Club welcomed Ian Howard for the first presentation of our new season. What an informative and entertaining evening it was as Ian presented his ‘The Trust is Black and White (with shades of grey!)’ talk.
It’s always good when people say during the evening that it’s one of our most enjoyable evenings they can remember. It was an evening that our members will be talking about for some time to come, and for all the right reasons.
I’m sure we will be welcoming Ian back soon

Architecture & Street Photography
(genre that overlap)

Watford Camera Club enjoyed a superb presentation by Ian Howard on Architecture and Street photography. This followed a recommendation by another camera club a few weeks ago on this Facebook page. I think all who were there would agree that his explanations of how he captured the initial image and then edited it was so well explained and demonstrated, that you couldn’t fail to learn from his work. All very achievable too, with many of his images taken in London.
He presented tonight for ‘free’ but with a donation made to British Heart Foundation on his behalf. He has a few other talks he offers and we shall certainly be looking to book him again in the near future as his work and delivery were excellent
Last evening members of Dunholme camera club had the pleasure of a zoom presentation by the very talented Ian Howard. Ian gave us, his Street and Architecture (Genre that overlap) talk. Ian was very generous, telling us how he progressed from the image he envisaged originally, through patience and planining,to the completed image. Along the way we were both entertained and instructed, whilst enjoying Ian's excellent photography. I'm sure we will be inviting Ian back to give us one of his other talks in the future. Thanks Ian.
